Now Hiring: Operations & Museum Director
The Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center also known as the Tuskegee History Center is seeking a dynamic and mission-driven leader to serve as its next Operations and Museum Director.
This senior leadership role will oversee the Museum’s daily operations while helping guide its continued growth as a nationally significant Civil Rights destination. The selected candidate will play a key role in deepening community impact in Tuskegee while advancing the national mission of the Fred Gray Institute.
About the Center
Rooted in Tuskegee, Alabama, the Center advances its mission through two interconnected pillars:
- The Tuskegee History Center (the Museum): a U.S. Civil Rights Trail site interpreting the multicultural history of Central Alabama, honoring the 623 victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and documenting the region’s Civil Rights movement and Attorney Fred Gray’s legal legacy.
- The Fred Gray Institute for Human and Civil Rights (the Institute): a national platform for civil rights education, leadership development, and justice-centered programming, including the annual Symposium, Dialogos dialogues, Alabama Legacy Luncheons, the Fred Gray Fellows, and the Deborah Gray Scholars Program.
Together, these components position the Center as both a destination and a national voice, preserving history while activating it for contemporary impact.
Key Responsibilities
The Operations and Museum Director reports to the Executive Director and will:
- Oversee the Center’s day-to-day administrative operations, including personnel, finances, donor acknowledgment, compliance, and internal systems
- Manage staff, volunteers, consultants, and vendors across the Museum and the Institute
- Lead annual fundraising for the Museum and support Institute fundraising with the Director of Advancement
- Build strong relationships across Tuskegee, Macon County, and Alabama to deepen community impact
- Operate the Museum as a vibrant, nationally significant Civil Rights destination, serving as spokesperson and shaping its future vision
- Serve as staff liaison to the Board, Executive Committee, and related entities
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A deep commitment to Civil Rights history, with particular understanding of Alabama’s legacy
- Cultural competence and credibility within African American communities and among Civil Rights stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience in museum operations, nonprofit management, or organizational development
- Proven skills in marketing, fundraising, and partnership building
- Familiarity with contemporary museum practices, including technology-enhanced and interactive engagement
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative abilities
- Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred
- Significant relevant experience is essential, as this is a senior leadership role
Location & Compensation
- Based at the Tuskegee History Center
- Tuskegee residency preferred, commuting from Montgomery or Auburn acceptable
- Salary: $65,000–$75,000, commensurate with experience
